Safeguarding is about preventing the abuse or neglect of adults at risk and protecting those who have been subjected to abuse or neglect.

Everybody has the right to be safe no matter who they are or what their circumstance is. Keeping people safe is everyone's business.

Adult at risk

Who is an adult at risk?

An adult at risk is someone who needs support with their physical or emotional wellbeing, who as a result may be considered vulnerable. They may need assistance with every day living tasks. Some examples of this could be requiring assistance with eating, dressing, managing money or going out of the house.

Abuse - Would I see it?

Abuse can take many forms such as:

  • Physical - Hitting, kicking or using undue restraint.
  • Psychological - Threats of harm or humiliation, controlling relationships and isolation.
  • Sexual - Unwanted sexual activity, including touching.
  • Financial - Theft, fraud or applying pressure around property or wills.
  • Neglect - Failure to meet the everyday needs of the adult at risk.

What should I do?

If you suspect a person is in immediate risk of harm call 999 and speak to the police.

Samaritans

The Samaritans is a helpline service which is available 24/7, providing emotional support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide.

CALL 24/7

CALL 24/7 offers a confidential listening and support service, providing emotional support and information/literature on Mental Health and related matters to the people of Wales.

CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably)

CALM run a free, confidential and anonymous helpline as well as a webchat service, offering help, advice and information to anyone who is struggling or in crisis

 

SASP (Support After Suicide Partnership)

The Support After Suicide Partnership brings together suicide bereavement organisations and people with lived experience, to give practical and emotional support for anyone bereaved by suicide.

Shout

Shout 85258 is a free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone who is struggling to cope.

SANE

SANE is a leading UK mental health charity that works to improve the quality of life for anyone affected by mental illness.


Domestic Abuse

What is Domestic Abuse?

The cross UK government definition of domestic violence and abuse defines Domestic abuse as:
“Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality”.

There are many different forms of domestic abuse; these include but are not limited to:

  • Coercively controlling behaviour emotional/psychological abuse
  • Physical abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Financial abuse
  • Harassment and stalking

Domestic abuse may also include a range of behaviours that, when viewed as isolated incidents, do not seem much, If they involve a pattern of behaviour that result in you feeling fear, alarm or distress, it is abuse.

Who can be affected by domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone regardless of; age, gender, nationality, ethnicity or ability and is regardless of Income, class or status, immigration status, sexual orientation or heath issues (including pregnancy).

Domestic abuse can happen between people who:

  • Are/have been in an intimate relationship together
  • Are/have lived together
  • Have children together
  • Are of close family relations

Domestic abuse often continues once the relationship is over.
